The Diploma in Specialist Rescue

The Diploma in Specialist Rescue qualification is available as a result of collaboration between the Fire Service College, Outreach Rescue and the Centre for Disaster Management, Coventry University.  It draws upon the strengths of all three organisations to provide flexible, comprehensive and demanding multi-disciplinary approaches to these areas of emergency service response.

It brings together the theoretical and practical needs of specialist rescue personnel with the flexibility to accommodate those with bias towards either management or hands-on technical roles. It offers the opportunity to broaden the understanding of rescue response around these specialist discipline areas.

Tutors are drawn from several disciplines, having extensive experience as rescue practitioners as well as trainers as part of their careers.  Several of our course team are current rescue team practitioners.

The combination of enormously experienced rescue personnel with years of tutoring and a passion for their subject is a powerful one.  This coupled to the rigorous standards required to meet University and Fire Service College accreditation and validation has helped us, for sixteen years, to maintain the quality of our programmes and to consequently retain the loyalty of our clients.

The modules that make up the Diploma are largely drawn from the existing rescue and disaster response training programmes provided by each of the partners including Search and Rescue from Collapsed Structures, Rope & Water Rescue, Casualty Management, Search Management, Flood Response Management and Incident Command.

Summary of Requirements

The Diploma requires four modules to be completed consisting of a residential training course followed by a written work based project for each of the modules – to be completed within twelve weeks of the residential course completion. Modules will be delivered on a continuous cycle providing a degree of flexibility as to enrolment and entry into that cycle. Currently, a total of sixteen modules are available to choose from. (See key to modules). For those who already hold Outreach, Fire Service College or equivalent qualifications in the relevant discipline there is the facility for the consideration of Accredited Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) for one module (i.e. 25%) – no work based project is required for this module.

It is not necessary to enrol for all four modules in one academic year. Up to four years is allowed for completion. Successful completion will result in the award of a Coventry University Diploma which can be presented at the University Graduation ceremony each November.

It should be noted that enrolment on any module as part of a diploma involves no additional costs compared to enrolment as a stand alone residential course. The cost figure quoted against each module summary includes all residential fees etc.

The diploma can be used as contribution to certain degree level or other Higher Educational qualifications. (One diploma is equivalent to 80 CATS Points or 40 ECTS Credits).

(For your information CATS means CREDIT ACCUMULATION AND TRANSFER SCHEME)
